GETTING THE BEST FROM YOUR PORTRAIT SESSION, OR,
WHAT TO WEAR … AND WHAT NOT TO WEAR!

Thank you for booking a portrait session!

Clothing can play an important factor in creating a successful portrait, so here are a few very basic guidelines to help you get the best from your portrait session.

Typically I will use a white background, supplemented by gray or black (or even colours such as red or blue!).  If you are not bringing a change of outfits, please bear in mind that white shirts will tend to blend in with a pure white background and should be avoided.  Similarly black clothing against a dark background.  (This blending, however, can be used very effectively for creative effect in a head shot.)

Probably the most important point to keep in mind is to avoid highly patterned or branded clothing, as this will dominate (or date) the photographs and prove very distracting from the subject.  Mild, pastel or neutral colours work well, and brighter colours too, depending on the mood.

Family and group portraits can be enhanced by outfitting the subjects in a similar style and colour range, e.g. you cannot beat the simplicity of jeans and T-shirts for informal shots.  Try to avoid colours, patterns or styles that might clash, so keep it all informal or formal.

But don’t worry unduly – I will be guided by what you wear and arrange a lighting set up accordingly!

I look forward to seeing you at your session, and hope you will enjoy it as much as I will!

Till then…
